Samsung Galaxy S III on Verizon gets one-click bootloader unlock, freedom is just a Google Play away

Samsung Galaxy S III on Verizon receives oneclick bootloader unlock app, freedom is just a Google Play away

We were intrigued to see a bootloader unlock emerge for Verizon’s Galaxy S III variant just this week. Unless you’re the kind for whom a beta is just too… safe, though, the method on offer to date has been a tad cryptic. Dingus on the RootzWiki forums has taken all the danger out of it through EZ-Unlock, an app that reduces most of the process to a single tap. While it does require existing root access, everything else is sorted out; its most recent forms can also re-lock the bootloader if there’s any anxiety about venturing out of bounds. The app is even available through Google Play, which makes unrestricted (if warranty-challenging) firmware just a short hop past the source link.

Samsung Galaxy S II on AT&T gets Android 4.0, leaves Sprint left to go

Samsung Galaxy S II on AT&T gets Android 40, just Sprint left to go

We’ve seen T-Mobile roll out Android 4.0 for its Galaxy S II variant, and now another American carrier is joining the pack. AT&T has started pushing out Android 4.0.3 (no 4.0.4, oddly) to its near-reference version of Samsung’s 2011 range leader. We wouldn’t brace for any surprises over the conservative OS updates seen elsewhere in the world, but it will at least give you Chrome for Android without turning to custom firmware. The odd man out among the major US carriers is Sprint’s Epic 4G Touch — it’s still humming along on 2.3 for now, and neither Sprint nor Samsung has given any further signs that they’re ready to make the leap.

[Thanks, Tom]

Parrot launching new AR.Drone2.0 at CES?

We happened upon Parrot’s outdoor AR.Drone corral at CES and this signage immediately caught our eyes. Parrot AR.Drone2.0 Fly – Record – Share: is this an all-new device or a firmware bump that adds some new functionality? The social media aspect of the poster is pretty self evident — and might be accomplished with a device firmware upgrade — but we’re kind of hoping for a new Drone with better cameras, speed, battery life, and while we’re listing things, a dedicated remote control wouldn’t hurt a bit. While we’re not sure exactly what AR.Drone2.0 is, you can be sure we’ll be back in a few days with hands-on of whatever shakes out of Parrot’s PR.

HTC Omega blessed with renders, revealing its front-facing camera

HTC’s decided to throw a similar get-together to rival the kickin’ shindig we had tonight, which hopefully means the company will show off the latest and greatest phones soon to grace its lineup. One such phone that’s been seeing a lot of talk lately is the Omega, rumored to be one of Peter Chou’s upcoming Windows Phones. Unfortunately, it’s just been a faceless name on paper — until now. Pocketnow got its hands on a rather well-detailed render of the Mango device, which shows off HTC’s traditional two-toned design (this time in white and gray) and a front-facing camera. While the latter feature isn’t new to the industry by any stretch of the imagination, it backs up Microsoft’s confirmation Wednesday that Mango will indeed support it. Anyone up for some sweet Skype video calling?

Sony Ericsson txt pro examined by FCC, 3G lovers shunned

Making it through the gauntlet of the FCC is often a very secretive process, since most manufacturers choose to keep the majority of details about a phone confidential. When that device in question’s already been the subject of a large Facebook campaign, however, there’s no point in staying quiet. This is the case of the Sony Ericsson txt pro (SK15a), a messaging device that came through the FCC’s labs with the photos unobscured. The handset appears to be designed primarily for texters and — given the lack of 3G or 4G support — nobody else. While the txt pro has GSM 850 / 1900 bands to make it compatible with AT&T and T-Mobile, it’s likely geared for developing markets and won’t see much (if any) facetime on store shelves in the US. We can’t imagine your thumbs will be terribly disappointed by this, but at least there’s countless other messaging phones out there to help your phalanges feel right at home.

Windows Phone 7 ‘Mango’ to bring Office 365, Facebook Chat, more Xbox Live integration?

The Windows Phone Dev Podcast unearthed some seemingly legit Windows Phone 7 screenshots last week that revealed a few new features apparently headed to the mobile OS, and it’s now back with another batch that show yet more additions said to be included with the so-called “Mango” update. That includes support for Facebook Chat and Office 365 (plus SkyDrive and SharePoint), as well as a revamped Games hub that suggests even more Xbox Live integration (including a rather interesting new “Automatic Sync” option). What’s more, the lock screen will apparently now show the album art if there is a song currently playing, and it seems there will be some new group messaging options as well. Of course, all that’s still unconfirmed by Microsoft, but you can judge all the screenshots for yourself at the link below.
