HTC One Red Hands On

In order to provide variety, over the summer HTC announced two new colours for its HTC One flagship – the HTC One Vivid Blue and the HTC One Red. The Red HTC One is likely to be very popular as it features a stylish design with a metallic finish and deep red colour that reminds us of the red Nokia Lumia smartphones.
Aside from the colour makeover, the HTC One Red features the same internals as its HTC One sibling. The same 4.7 inch Full HD SLCD3 display is on board as is the outstanding dual frontal HTC BoomSound stereo speakers and the 2.1MP front facing camera. Under the hood there is a powerful 1.7GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor with 2GB RAM and 32GB internal storage.
The back features the 4MP Ultrapixel camera with Optical Image Stabilisation, Full HD 1080p video recording and the BeatsAudio branding. The HTC One Red features a unibody design with embedded 2,300 mAh battery that is not user accessible or replaceable. Just like the HTC One Vivid Blue, the HTC One Red comes with a Red and Black design that comes with the same Red metallic finish that we’ve seen on the HTC One Black and the HTC One Silver.

Jitterbug Touch 2 smartphone designed for ‘aging Americans’ available now for $140

Jitterbug Touch 2 smartphone designed for 'aging Americans' available now for $140

Sure, there are plenty of smartphones to choose from nowadays, but for some people it’s more important to have a device that’s very easy to use rather than, say, one that looks great and performs extraordinarily. Here’s where GreatCall’s just-announced Jitterbug Touch 2 comes in. This Ice Cream Sandwich-based smartphone isn’t tailored for the new generation per se, but rather for folks like grandma and grandpa — or, as the company puts it, “aging Americans.” Much like its predecessor, the second-gen Jitterbug Touch is loaded with specs that likely won’t wow many, including a 4-inch, 800 X 480 display with Qualcomm’s MSM8625 1.5GHz CPU, 512MB RAM and 4GB of internal storage. However, GreatCall doesn’t want this to be the focus; instead plans to lure people in with Jitterbug’s utterly simple UI and suite of health / medical apps.

MoDaCo.Switch for Galaxy S 4 now available in beta… to Indiegogo backers

MoDaCoSwitch for Galaxy S 4 now available in beta to Indiegogo backers

For about a month now, HTC One owners have been able to enjoy MoDaCo’s efforts to mix up the Android experience on the Taiwanese company’s handset. But, hey, don’t go thinking anyone forgot about Samsung’s own flagship device, the Galaxy S 4. Available now to those who backed the campaign on Indiegogo, MoDaCo.Switch is giving the GS4 crowd a ROM to sense what it’s like to seamlessly switch between the TouchWiz and AOSP versions of Android OS. It’s worth nothing that this particular ROM is only compatible with GSM models of the Galaxy S 4, and, as ever, creator Paul O’Brien notes it is a beta after all, so some issues may arise. In other words, backers must install at their own risk — capiche?

Fresh Paint updated to support lower-tier Windows Phone 8 devices

If you’re one of many Windows Phone 8 users who downloaded the Fresh Paint app when it arrived on mobile devices a few weeks ago, you might’ve been disappointed to find it wouldn’t run on certain devices. Now, however, it has been updated to run on Windows Phone 8 handsets with just 512MB of RAM, which includes models like the HTC 8S, the Nokia Lumia 520/521, 620, 625 and 720. So if you now have a qualifying handset, feel free to hit up the Windows Phone Store link below to unleash that pent-up creativity on a digital canvas.

Android 4.3 update starts rolling out for the Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One Google Play editions

Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean) update for the Google Play editions of the HTC One and the Samsung Galaxy S4 has finally started rolling out. This comes soon after both the HTC and Samsung releases the Kernel source code online. The Android 4.3 update for the Google Nexus devices started rolling out last week, soon after the announcement. Both these devices were running on Android 4.2.2 (Jelly Bean) when it released.
Even though the Android 4.3 update doesn’t bring major UI changse. It brings new features including Restricted Profiles , Bluetooth 4.0 low energy support , OpenGL ES 3.0 support and more. In addition the Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Play edition gets Bluetooth tethering. The icon sizes has been increased on both the devices. IR feature now works on the HTC One.
The build number is JWR66V for both the devices. The OTA update is just 150 MB for the Galaxy S4 and 180 MB for the HTC One. The update would roll out gradually.

Facebook reportedly building Flipboard-style mobile reading app

Facebook reportedly building Flipboardstyle mobile reading app

There have been murmurs of Facebook building a mobile reading app; tonight, that talk is getting a little louder. The Wall Street Journal claims that the social network has spent the past year working on a dedicated story browser, codenamed Reader, that would curate articles in a Flipboard-like interface. While most other details of the rumored project aren’t available, it’s reportedly important enough that Mark Zuckerberg is closely involved. The company isn’t commenting on its plans, but there’s reason to believe that Reader is more than just idle speculation: Facebook recently added hashtag support as a “first step” toward helping users track topics. Accordingly, the company’s Graph API includes some unused RSS code that could prove relevant for browsing story feeds. There’s no guarantee that we’ll see the app soon, if at all. When mobile is becoming the cornerstone of Facebook’s business, however, we wouldn’t completely rule out Reader’s existence.

Android metrics show Jelly Bean adoption overtaking Ice Cream Sandwich

Google dashboard metrics show Android 4 near 60 percent of active users

Google’s big shake-up of Android version metrics has already given us a better understanding of where the platform’s active users truly stand. Now that we’re a month into the new methodology, we have a good sense of where those users are going — and they’re moving to Jelly Bean in droves. Android 4.1 and 4.2 combined grew to represent 28.4 percent of regular usage, or enough to finally overtake Ice Cream Sandwich at 27.5 percent. Not surprisingly, the transition to the newer OS involved a balanced mix of users either upgrading from ICS (down by 1.8 percent) or transitioning from devices running Gingerbread or earlier (down 1.7 percent). It will be a long while before Jelly Bean becomes the dominant platform, if it ever does, but we’re not expecting a slowdown in adoption when flagships like the Galaxy S 4 and One are luring many of us into an upgrade.
