Verizon Lumia 1520 variant leaked in China, teases 20MP PureView camera and Zeiss lens

Verizon branded Lumia 1520 variant leaked in China, teases 20megapixel PureView camera and Zeiss lens

An oversized smartphone with Zeiss optics and PureView camera technology? We wouldn’t expect anything less from Nokia, but it’s nice to see the rumors roll in, all the same. Noted Weibo leaker Houdabao has managed to get his hands on a large Lumia device with a PureView 20-megapixel camera, Zeiss optics and Verizon branding. The post describes the devices as a “big big Windows Phone,” which sounds an awful lot like the rumored Lumia 1520. The speakers and camera flash are in slightly different locations than the leaked image we saw earlier this month, but we’re willing to chalk that up to carrier variations. Nokia hasn’t said anything official just yet, but rumors suggest that the device will be officially unveiled later this month.

Poll are you buying the new iPhone 5S or iPhone 5C

Naturally, they’re pretty well differentiated, which may make the decision to pick one up (or not) that much more challenging. So, we leave it to you, dear reader: are you planning to equip yourself with one of Apple’s newest phones here in just a few weeks? If so, which one? If not, why? Of course, those who’ve found little to love about iOS have some fairly fantastic options coming their way this holiday season as well. Leave your vote and note below, won’t you? Moto X leaks in more press shots, this time in white

Moto X leaks in more press shots, this time in white

And the saga continues! Hot on the heels of this morning’s leaked renders comes a couple more press shots of the Moto X, courtesy of @evleaks — this time in glorious unicorn white. There’s not much more to mention here other than it’s a lot easier to spot the mics front and back and to get a feel for the texture that adorns the rear. It looks very much like the svelte handset Eric Schmidt recently flaunted at the annual Allen and Co media conference. Not a fan of the existing hues? Motorola’s been pretty clear the phone will be available in custom colors — we’re longing for a beautiful shade of purple ourselves. With the official Moto X launch slated for Friday August 1st, we’re only days away from getting all the details, so stay tuned for more.

Motorola’s flagship Moto X to be out by October

At the D11 conference, Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside, confirmed that the smartphone manufacturer that has been keeping a low profile will be out with a new smartphone dubbed the Moto X later this year. Expected to be out by October, the phone is geared to have exceptional power management.
Woodside claims that this will be achieved by the use of dual processors though he did not clarify whether this meant the use of ARM’s big.LITTLE architecture or a physically distinct low power mode chip. Motorola has also been working on the use of low power sensors and the results of that research will be seen in the Moto X which will be a contextually aware handset as claimed by Woodside.
Motorola plans to make the handset at 500,000 sq ft. facility in Texas that was previously occupied by Nokia. Woodside claimed that the company aims to assemble 70% of the handset in the US itself while the processor would be sourced from Taiwan. OLED screens will be manufactured in Korea and will presumably be supplied by Samsung. The Moto X will join a range of handsets that the company plans to launch this year across the price spectrum. FCC Outs Mystery Motorola Handset for AT&T

Documents on the Federal Communications Commission web site provide a peek at an unannounced handset from Motorola. The XT 1058 was certified with AT&T’s unique LTE bands, in addition to 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.0, and NFC — all hallmarks of a high-end smartphone. Motorola has not released a handset for AT&T since last year’s Atrix HD. The most recent batch of high-end smartphones made by Motorola were all sold by Verizon Wireless under the Droid brand. The FCC documents provide a rough sketch of the XT 1058, but no other specific details beyond the wireless certifications.

LG Optimus G for Sprint updated to Android 4.1.2

LG Optimus G for Sprint updated to Android 412

Today’s been a good day for smartphone updates. In addition to the One X on AT&T and the Droid RAZR on Verizon both receiving bumps to Jelly Bean, Sprint is giving another reason to smile with an update to Android 4.1.2 for the Optimus G. Along with the usual set of improvements such as Google Now, Chrome replaces the default Android browser in this release, and users will also find improved voice search and a new camera app. Additionally, users of alternative launchers will be glad to know that system widgets can be now be installed without root access. All in all, it’s high time that this top shelf smartphone made the leap into the world of Jelly Bean, so go ahead and grab the OTA update today.

Google reportedly poaches key Samsung marketing VP for Motorola

Google reportedly snags key Samsung marketing VP for Motorola

Google may be doing more to boost Motorola’s presence than whipping up a new device strategy, if rumors are true. AllThingsD claims that Google has poached Samsung’s American VP for strategic marketing, Brian Wallace, for a roughly equivalent role at Motorola. The move would not only give Motorola a high-profile executive who’s had stints at companies like RIM, but one who’s not afraid of taking the competition head-on: Samsung’s TV ads poking fun at iPhone launch queues appeared under Wallace’s tenure. We’ve asked Google, Motorola and Samsung whether or not the shift is real; Motorola won’t comment in either direction, and we haven’t heard from the remaining two. If there’s any truth to the story, Motorola might have a stronger carrier-independent sales pitch than the occasional dystopic TV spot.

ITC Judge finds Motorola patent claim invalid in case against Apple

ITC Judge finds Motorola patent claim invalid in case against Apple

Apple and Motorola’s patent spat at the ITC has been dragging on for months, with Moto getting a favorable infringement ruling early on — but it seems that Apple will be ending the year on a legal high note. That aforementioned win by MMI was overturned in August, when the Commission found that Apple had not, in fact, infringed one of Motorola’s WiFi patents. In making that ruling, the Commission remanded the case to Judge Pender and asked him to revisit his finding of non-infringement on a separate, touch UI patent at issue.

Today, Pender finished that task, making an Initial Determination on Remand that, while Apple’s products infringe the patent claim in question, there is no violation because said claim is invalid. Why the finding of invalidity? Well, Pender found that the claim is anticipated by another, older patent that’s owned by Motorola, but not asserted in the action. This undoubtedly brings good tidings to Apple’s legal department, as it could mean this fight with Moto (as opposed to all the others) is coming to an end. That said, Motorola isn’t bereft of holiday hope — it can still appeal Pender’s latest ruling.
