Facebook reportedly building Flipboard-style mobile reading app

Facebook reportedly building Flipboardstyle mobile reading app

There have been murmurs of Facebook building a mobile reading app; tonight, that talk is getting a little louder. The Wall Street Journal claims that the social network has spent the past year working on a dedicated story browser, codenamed Reader, that would curate articles in a Flipboard-like interface. While most other details of the rumored project aren’t available, it’s reportedly important enough that Mark Zuckerberg is closely involved. The company isn’t commenting on its plans, but there’s reason to believe that Reader is more than just idle speculation: Facebook recently added hashtag support as a “first step” toward helping users track topics. Accordingly, the company’s Graph API includes some unused RSS code that could prove relevant for browsing story feeds. There’s no guarantee that we’ll see the app soon, if at all. When mobile is becoming the cornerstone of Facebook’s business, however, we wouldn’t completely rule out Reader’s existence.

Facebook Messenger on Android loaded with free voice calls for Canadian users

Facebook Messenger on Android loaded with free voice calls for Canadian users

Android’s flavor of Facebook Messenger has just been updated with VoIP functionality for the social network’s Canadian users. There’s no word when Android faithful in the US will snag the functionality, but Cancuks can at least ring their American counterparts who wield the iOS app. Version 2.3 of the mobile messenger also makes group conversations accessible in the sidebar, allows them to be named from the top of a talk and makes them searchable by name and friends. Hit the neighboring source link to grab the revamped software.

    iPhone 5 review

Thinner. Lighter. Faster. Simpler. The moment the iPhone 5 was unveiled we knew that it was checking off all the right boxes, folding in all the improvements and refinements people have been demanding over the past year — yet plenty of folks still went to their respective social networks to type out their bitter disappointment. iPhone upgrade ennui seemed to be sweeping the nation, a sentiment that appeared to quickly dissipate when it came time for people to vote with their wallets.

The iPhone 5 is here — or will be soon, anyway — and it’s every bit the device that people were asking for when the iPhone 4S came out. Its new design has less mass yet leaves room for a larger display and LTE wireless, all while increasing battery life. In nearly every respect, this is an upgrade over the 4S that came before, though it arrives almost a year later than many had hoped. Is it too late to keep pace with the rapidly iterating Android offerings, or is it so good it was worth waiting for? The answer lies below.

There’s a 3.5 Inch ClearBlack LED-backlit IPS TFT nHD resolution touchscreen display, the first time we’ve seen Clearblack on an LED-backlit screen.

    IMG_2052wtmk

There’s a 1Ghz processor, and Symbian belle, which means things are very impressive in overall operations and user experience compared to previous Symbian devices.

    IMG_2055wtmk

There’s an 8 Megapixel EDoF fixed-focus camera at the back, with a Dual LED Flash and 720p HD Video recording, and also a front facing camera for video calls. Again we’re not fans of the EDof Camera.

    IMG_2054wtmk

There’s also 8GB of internal memory, and a microSD card slot.

    IMG_2056wtmk

Little things like Active noise cancellation to improve call quality are also onboard on the Nokia 701, along with a host of connectivity options like Quadband GSM, pentaband 3g, HSPA, Bluetooth 3.0, NFC, Wifi, GPS, FM radio (not transmitter unfortunately) and a 3.5mm Audio Jack.

Coming to stores this Q3, in Steel Dark, Silver Light, Amethyst violet, and White colors. We’re still working on our preview of the Nokia 701, but check out our hands-on video below in the meanwhile:

    BlackBerry Curve Touch leaks out

The BlackBerry Curve has always been our favorite ‘berry because of its solid keyboard and lack of pretension to any functionality beyond great messaging, but it looks like things are about to change fast: you’re looking at a leaked image of what CrackBerry says is the Curve Touch, codenamed “Malibu,” and it’s all touchscreen — unlike the rumored Apollo, there’s no keyboard in sight. We’ve only got specs on the CDMA version, and they’re right in line with what you’d expect for a midrange device due out in late 2011 / early 2012: 800MHz Qualcomm MSM8655 processor, 3.25-inch HVGA screen, 5 megapixel camera with HD video, 1GB storage with microSD expansion and 512MB of RAM, GPS, and NFC. Of course, CrackBerry says those are just “proposed specs,” so anything could change, but man — are we crazy for thinking an an all-touch Curve definitely seems to redefine everything about what a BlackBerry is and is not?
