Review: RamInfo

Yes, yes, I know the OS is supposed to handle RAM for me. And, on the whole, it does a fine job. But I wish Nokia/Symbian would trust me with the salient statistic of how full my phone’s RAM is. It’s a statistic that only an uber-geek would want, but then that’s me. In the past I’ve installed task managers or file managers, just for an incidental RAM reporting menu option, but this is much easier. One tiny and simple (and free) widget and I can now see exactly how much RAM is left with once glance at my home screen.

Review: Proporta Turbocharger 7000

We’ve enthused about Proporta’s mobile chargers ever since day one, with capacities rising from just over 1000mAh to 3400mAh, then to 5000mAh and now this, the Turbocharger 7000, at a whopping 7000mAh. In this review, I look at what you get for your money and assess its performance, its build quality and its worth, in terms of keeping smartphones, games consoles and even tablets charged and working.

Nokia Pulse gets a big update, Maps Suite tweaked

If you’ve been brave enough to throw yourself into the Beta Maps Suite, note that there’s a big update to Pulse, its core module that allows you to share your location and activities with friends and relatives with other Symbian phones loaded with the software. Changelog and links below, and the usual caveats apply about beta software and backups!

The Nokia E7 and 700 – an unlikely comparison

The Nokia E7 and 700 – there couldn’t be two Symbian devices that are more different. The E7 is the enterprise-focussed behemoth, and the 700 is the ultra slim device made to discreetly fit into any pocket. Surprisingly, there is very little that you can do with one device that you can’t do with the other. Thanks to Belle’s updated user interface, Symbian’s best in class power management and its general functionality, there is plenty to lament about Nokia’s decision to sunset the platform.

361 Degrees S02 E05 – £100 to spend at CPW

In episode 5, season 2, of the 361 Degrees Podcast the set themselves a ‘fun’ challenge – to choose a new pre-pay mobile phone costing less than £100 to give as a as a Christmas present. To keep thing fair we limited our shopping spree to UK retailer Carphone Warehouse. The underlying idea of the episode was to look at the products on offer at the lower end of the market, an area that doesn’t usually receive much attention.

Minor updates to Nokia Maps and QML Store

Another day, another update or two – ho hum… Strictly for those you actually need them, but meriting a quick mention in passing, there are bug fix updates out today to Nokia Maps for Symbian Belle (available via the Store) and to the beta QML Store client for Symbian^3/Anna, fixing a specific ‘black screen’ error on installation (i.e. if it’s working for you, you don’t need the fix).

The ZingMagic story

There’s a nice piece over on the Nokia Developer blog highlighting the story of ZingMagic, a long time favourite developer here at AAS for polished native Symbian games. The piece covers how the company got started, how its games are built and recent success with advertisement-sponsored versions of its games.

Symbian Belle updates officially ‘early 2012’

Although Nokia hasn’t officially ever claimed a specific date for updates to Symbian Belle for existing Symbian^3/Anna smartphones, many people (including me) had been hoping for the update to start appearing this month, a hope fuelled by the demonstration of all current models running Belle at Nokia World and by Belle firmware appearing on firmware flashing systems. However, we’ve now had official word, quoted below – the bottom line is that a little more patience is required.

Spotlighting the N90 – from 2005!

You’ve got to love someone who respects the past. Sergejs Cuhrajs, as guest writer on Nokia Connects, has put up a heart felt and perspective-laden look at one of this (and my) favourite Nokia designs ever, the first real ‘transformer’ phone, the N90. This was the first Nokia smartphone to feature Carl Zeiss optics and its form factor remains almost unique even today.

Nokia’s New Mix Radio App for Lumia 800

Following the first sales of its new flagship device, Nokia’s deal with Microsoft to use Windows Phone on its devices will, in the future, provide the company with first-hand access to a version of the platform, allowing the phone maker to build more native apps into its devices. Nokia is pairing its Windows Phone-powered Lumia 800 with its music app Mix Radio. Mix Radio scans the music library on users’ devices to assess their interests and then uses the data to create personalized radio stations. The app also comes with dozens of regular streaming stations and other downloadable programming.

Nokia’s new music effort is supported by a music intelligence platform called the Echo Nest, which powers Mix Radio’s user customization features. You can enter up to three artists you like, and watch as a brand new radio station is created just for you, with what we can hope are songs you will love and enjoy. The service can also use the metadata from your existing songs to automatically compile a new music station according to your tastes.

Nokia Music is Nokia’s official music software, and includes a store, lots of pre-programmed radio stations and a gig finder for live shows. The music stations can be downloaded for up to 15 hours of offline listening, so a constant Internet connection is not a must with Nokia Music. The service is pre-installed on all Lumia 800 devices, and will be available with Lumia 710 as well.

In the other side, with software running on top of the Windows platform like this, the manufacturer may be able to gain an advantage on companies like HTC and Samsung, which ship their handsets with the stock version of Windows Phones.
