HTC and Apple settle all patent issues, enter 10-year licensing deal

HTC and Apple have just confirmed that they’ve settled all of their ongoing patent disputes, ending all of their lawsuits and opting into a 10-year licensing agreement. To refresh your memory, this particular saga begin back on March 2nd, 2010, when Apple filed lawsuits with the International Trade Commission and US District Court. That initial filing covered 20 patents related to iOS, which it accused HTC of infringing upon, and since then it has only been an ever-expanding battle. Essentially all the juicy details of the settlement between the companies are completely under wraps, but both HTC’s CEO, Peter Chou and Apple’s man-in-charge, Tim Cook have issued brief words for the official joint statement (the whole of which can be seen after the break):

HTC is pleased to have resolved its dispute with Apple, so HTC can focus on innovation instead of litigation, said Peter Chou, CEO of HTC.

We are glad to have reached a settlement with HTC, said Tim Cook, CEO of Apple. “We will continue to stay laser focused on product innovation.

Notably, this settlement applies to all past and future patents for the companies, meaning we shouldn’t be witnessing the two fight it out in court for years to come — at least on the patent front. Hopefully we’ll soon begin to see more of the same with other ongoing patent wars — Apple vs. Samsung, anyone?

Nexus 4 priced at 390 euros by purported Carphone Warehouse in-store display placard

Purported Nexus 4 instore display placards list price at 390 euros Carphone Warephone leak, l

Oh, Carphone Warehouse — it just can’t seem to keep what it knows about the LG / Google Nexus 4 under lock and key. Just days after briefly listing the phone on its website, purported in-store displays for the yet unannounced device have leaked out to Android Authority. While essentially of the details are the same as what we saw last (1.5 GHz Snapdragon S4 SoC, 8MP cam, 12-hour talk time rating, etc.), the listing reveals that the “sim-free” phone itself will sell for 390 euros (about $504) — previously we’d only seen the per-month pricing at 31 euros, which is also found here. There’s no mention of that October 30th sale date this time, and it would seem unlikely now given that Google’s had to indefinitely postpone its NYC-based Android event for the 29th due to hurricane Sandy. For now, you can get more details from the source link below.

Amazon Audible hits WP 7.5: gesture controlled audiobooks, but no voice control

Amazon Audible hits WP 75, brings gesture control to audiobooks, lacks voice control

It didn’t land in the Marketplace yesterday as announced, but Amazon’s Audible audio book app for Windows Phone 7.5 is now available for download. This Metro-fied version of the app is free to install (including some short samples to get you started), and signing in with your Amazon account lets you purchase any books that the service has on offer. Media can be controlled using a swipe gesture interface, and there are even varying levels of badges to reward how much of a book-worm you become. All that said, we haven’t been able to use the voice control functionally shown off by Microsoft at its Developers Summit in our tests to be found here, so it’s sure seemingly like its most highlighted feature might be a WP 8-only affair. If you’re eager to get your literary listening on, you’ll find a download source and more info about the app at the source link below.
