Nexus 4 price drops by $100 to $199 for 8GB, $249 for 16GB

The cheapest unlocked stock Android phone you could buy just got even cheaper: Google has dropped the price of the Nexus 4 8GB to $199 from the original price of $299, and the 16GB model to $249 from $349. It’s fast approaching the anniversary date of the latest Google phone, so the timing is about right for the discount. However, we do wonder if this means a replacement is nigh. After all, Google has yet to introduce the next Nexus successor, and we certainly don’t think the Moto X is all the Mountain View company has to offer. Until then, the Nexus 4 is pretty much the best deal for stock Android lovers who wish to be untied to a carrier. So if you feel like snatching one up now, you had best hit the source link before, you know, it sells out again.

Fresh Paint updated to support lower-tier Windows Phone 8 devices

If you’re one of many Windows Phone 8 users who downloaded the Fresh Paint app when it arrived on mobile devices a few weeks ago, you might’ve been disappointed to find it wouldn’t run on certain devices. That’s because the initial release of the program was only for higher-end WP8 phones with a healthy dosage of RAM. Now, however, it has been updated to run on Windows Phone 8 handsets with just 512MB of RAM, which includes models like the HTC 8S, the Nokia Lumia 520/521, 620, 625 and 720. So if you now have a qualifying handset, feel free to hit up the Windows Phone Store link below to unleash that pent-up creativity on a digital canvas.

More details surface on Sprint’s upcoming Unlimited, My Way plans

More details surface on Sprint's upcoming Unlimited, My Way plans

We just received a few more internal training documents that further explains the new Unlimited plans that Sprint will be launching this coming Friday. Of course, that Sprint Unlimited Guarantee is only available for the “unlimited” part of any plan you sign up for, and it doesn’t mean the rate won’t change over time. The guarantee is also only applicable to the new “Unlimited, My Way” plans, and not to the existing “Everything” plans, even if those “Everything” plans have unlimited data. It doesn’t apply to tablets, just phones, and is non-transferrable to another subscriber.

Existing Sprint customers who want to swap out their plans to the new ones may do so without extending their contract, though new lines do require a two-year service agreement. To those who have employer discounts, the carrier will discount the monthly data charge for each line rather than the primary rate plan. However, it also states that the My All-In plan (the one that bundles unlimited talk, text, data and a 5GB mobile hotspot) is not eligible for any discount, employer or otherwise.

Leaked BlackBerry 10 screenshots reveal new UI, Siri-like voice interface

Leaked BlackBerry 10 screenshots reveal new UI, possible Sirilike voice interface

It’s a little over a month until BlackBerry 10‘s official introduction, but that hasn’t stopped leaked screenshots of the OS from circulating on the web. Some folks on the Tinhte Vietnamese forums, which also revealed hands-on video and gallery of the BlackBerry 10 L-Series, have just released pictures of RIM’s revamped phone UI. Most notably, the images provide a sneak peek at a new “BlackBerry Hub” all-in-one message center along with an intriguing voice interface that reminds us a lot of Siri. We also get a preview of how apps like Twitter, Facebook and Foursquare will look; unsurprisingly, they seem pretty similar to their Android and iOS cousins. It certainly looks as if the redesign is a complete overhaul rather than just a quick paint job, but we won’t know the full details until we see it for ourselves early next year. Until then, head on over to the source to get an early look at what could be RIM’s savior.

BBM Money to launch in Indonesia, allows peer-to-peer fund transfers

RIM might be struggling for market share here in the US, but the BlackBerry name still enjoys quite a bit of popularity elsewhere in the world. Take Indonesia for example, where the company will launch BBM Money, a transactional service that’ll allow money transfers between BlackBerry owners. Apparently BBM is already a popular way to set up peer-to-peer transactions in the Southeast Asian country, so the service essentially closes the loop. With Android usage on the rise over there — around 52 percent market share according to a recent IDC report — RIM is likely trying anything it can to retain its stronghold. We’re not sure when exactly BBM Money will go live, though RIM has said it’s to come “shortly,” perhaps along with the launch of BlackBerry 10 in 2013.

Windows Phone 8 not working with Xbox Video purchases

If you just bought a Windows Phone 8 device like the Nokia Lumia 920 or the HTC 8x and were hoping to load it with Xbox content for the holidays — after all, they’re both from Microsoft, right? — it seems that you may be in for some disappointment. As of right now, purchases or rentals from the newly-branded Xbox Video will not sync to Windows Phone 8. Microsoft has even officially acknowledged the issue in its support page, stating: “Windows Phone 8 does not currently support playback of rented or purchased content from the Xbox Video Store.” The article goes on to say that you can go to the Windows Phone Feature Suggestions page to recommend it for future releases. Gee, thanks, Microsoft; that’s so helpful. Now we’ll actually have to talk to our families. The horror.

TransPhone smartphone / tablet hybrid gets official, doesn’t quite topple ASUS PadFone

TransPhone yet another smartphonetablet combo

It looks like CMIT’s TransPhone smartphone-tablet combo has finally made it to stores after its debut in May of last year. A competitor to the ASUS PadFone, the TransPhone fits inside a 7-inch display dubbed the TransPad, and runs Android 2.3.5. The TransPhone has a 3.5-inch screen, a Snapdragon S1 processor, 512MB RAM and ROM, 512MB internal memory plus a 32GB microSD card, a 5-megapixel camera, and more. As for price, a TransPhone plus TransPad combo is $429.99 while individual TransPads are $140 each and a solo TransPhone is $379. You can even go hog wild and get a Family Pack for $999 or a Business Pack for $4499. Seeing as the ASUS PadFone adds a keyboard to the mix, and that there’s a PadFone 2 coming up soon, we have a feeling the TransPhone won’t be much of a threat to ASUS.
