S3370

At the TeleVision 2010 held in Netherlands, Samsung showcased one of their (as yet) unannounced phones, the Samsung S3370 smart phone. While there was a photo leak about a month ago for the Samsung S3370 cellphone, no details were then available and so we did not see fit to write up on it. Now however, Samsung has made available some of the tech specs of the Samsung S3370 and we have clearer photos of it too.
The Samsung S3370 mobile phone is set to have a 2.6″ TFT resistive touchscreen, a 1.3 MP camera, Bluetooth 2.1, USB 2.0, FM radio and 3G connectivity. Somewhat like the Samsung Reality, the Samsung S3370 cellphone is a full touchscreen phone and does not feature a physical keypad.

This means that the Samsung S3370 smart phone is really quite compact (99.9 x 53 x 12.9 mm) although perhaps a shade thicker than the iPhone and similar high end smart phones. The Samsung S3370 mobile phone weighs about 86g which is pretty light and should mean that it is comfortable to handle.

The Samsung S3370 cellphone has already been labeled as an entry-level touchscreen phone and truth be told that is pretty much what the Samsung S3370 smart phone looks like to us too.

Samsung I9000 Galaxy S

Competition is certainly one of the things that make the Android OS so much fun. There are already several manufacturers involved in the Google OS game and each of them has already released a flagship that aims at the peak of the food chain.

Samsung might be coming a tad late to the party but they are obviously entering with a bang. The I9000 Galaxy S packs a display of the greatest technology that the mobile world has ever seen and a pretty big one at that. A snappy 1GHz Cortex A8 CPU, HD video recording and a sweetly slim waistline make it look like the real deal in the eyes of every real geek.
Let’s take a look at the other features that the Samsung I9000 Galaxy S puts to the table.

Galaxy S GT I9000 5 540x408

Samsung I9000 Galaxy S at a glance:

General: GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz, UMTS 900/1900/2100 MHz, HSDPA 7.2 Mbps,
  • HSUPA 5.76 Mbps
  • Form factor: Touchscreen bar phone
  • Dimensions: 122.4 x 64.2 x 9.9 mm, 118 g
  • Display: 4″ 16M-color Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen, 480 x 800 pixels
  • CPU: Samsung Cortex A8 Hummingbird 1 GHz processor
  • OS: Android 2.1 (Eclair)
  • Memory: 8/16GB storage, microSD card slot
  • Camera: 5 megapixel auto-focus camera with face detection and touch focus; 720p video recording at 30fps
  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0 with A2DP, standard microUSB port, GPS receiver with A-GPS, 3.5mm audio jack
  • Misc: TouchWiz 3.0 UI, built-in accelerometer, multi-touch input, proximity sensor, Swype text input
As you can see the Samsung I9000 Galaxy S specs sheet is long enough to be considered high-end. What’s even better is that it manages to put something on top, namely the large 4” Super AMOLED display, which should become the new thing to beat if it has the performance of the Samsung S8500 Wave unit.

The Samsung I9000 Galaxy S at ours
The TouchWiz-like Android customization still had some performance issues on the Galaxy Spica so we will have to see if those are fixed for the Galaxy S. We are also yet to check out how the new 1GHz Samsung Cortex A8 CPU compares to its Snapdragon peers in the Android environment, but we have a good feeling about it.
At any rate the Samsung I9000 Galaxy S is a fine piece of mobile technology and we are as eager as you to see if it will actually manage to top the charts or end up in the chasing pack. So let’s not waste any more time and head to the hardware part of the preview where we’ll examine the Galaxy S ergonomics.

MWC Day 1 Roundup

Mobile World Congress, Barcelona, Spain 2010, February 14, 2010.

The Mobile World Congress opened for another year and it was certainly Samsung’s time to shine. They had the big showing this year with the Samsung Wave S8500, which is the first bada OS powered phone.

Samsung Wave S8500
The Wave will include a 3.3 inch Super AMOLED touchscreen and have a resolution of 480×800 pixels. The super AMOLED screen supposedly has a clearer image than the traditional AMOLED screen. It also allows phones to have longer battery life and have a thinner body. The Wave will also have tempered glass and will use an interface called TouchWiz 3.0.

s8500 Wave

In terms of functionality, the Wave will have a 1GHz Samsung processer. What’s also amazing about this phone is that it will have a 5.0MP camera, but that’s not what’s so great about it. It will allow you to record in HD resolution! It will also have your basic functionality, such as Wi-Fi, GPS, and Bluetooth. Adding to the hype is that the Wave will have support for Wi-Fi 802.11n and Bluetooth 3.0.

Samsung Beam I8520
Not only did Samsung showoff the Wave S8500, but they also display the Beam I8520 on their MWC site. If you’re a fan of Android, this model will run Android 2.1. The Beam will have a 3.7 inch WVGA Sper AMOLED screen. The highlight of this particular model? The Texas Instruments projector built into the phone.

iPhone is the #1 Smartphone in the world in mobile web use

The Apple iPhone is dominating in the world’s smartphone mobile web usage. Adweb’s fourth quarter report found that the iPhone is responsible for 54% of all of the mobile web traffic in North America in three months. It was also over half of the handheld usage in Latin America at 56%. Western and Eastern Europe, was 78% and 51% respectively. In Oceania, it was a whopping 92%.

Africa and Asia showed their loyalty to the Symbian operating system. The iPhone had a usage of 8% and 27% respectively. In most areas, Symbian was the second most used system, except in North America where is almost non-existent.
Worldwide, the iPhone is accountable for 51% of the traffic, Symbian is 21%, and Android is 16%.

The biggest shift in use was the lack of mobile web usage on Nokia devices. Approximately 26 million iPhones were shipped to replace Nokia devices. Also, Android devices seemed to shake up the market. In North America, in December, the Motorola Droid was the most common device used next to the Apple iPhone. If it wasn’t an Android device, it was the Blackberry Curve 8300, Palm Pre, and Samsung R450, that was being used for web usage.

Only time will tell if other devices will start to truly compete with the Apple iPhone. Android seems to be on their way in some aspects of the world, but until then Apple is surely showing their dominance.
