DirecTV GenieGo takes the fight to Sling, brings TV streaming anywhere on PC and iOS

DirecTV GenieGo adds live streaming anywhere on PC and iOS, takes on Sling directly

DirecTV recently switched the name of its Nomad transcoding device to GenieGo to match its new DVRs, a change we first noticed on its Android app. On Windows PC and iOS the apps are about to get a new update that changes the name and lets users stream video from their DVRs over WiFi even when they’re away from home (Mac and Android support is due later in the year.) Previously, it allowed users to stream live and recorded TV, or download recorded TV to a mobile device for viewing offline, but Slingbox-style streaming of live or recorded TV anywhere is new, and brings it closer to the device we thought it could be when it launched. Solid Signal and DBSTalk report the incoming update (not live yet, but it should pop up tomorrow) is easy to use, letting users stream recordings, start a recording so it can stream or remotely setting up the transcoder to make a mobile copy users can download once they get home. Satellite TV competitor Dish has brought deeper integration of Sling into its new Hopper DVRs, and now DirecTV has its own in-house solution, anyone thinking of switching sides?

Windows Phone app for Modern UI updated to include document browsing and syncing

Windows Phone app for Modern UI updated to include document browsing and syncing

Hot on the heels of an update to the Windows Phone desktop app for Win 7 and 8, the Modern UI version is now getting a solid refresh of its own. Enhancements include the benefit of browsing documents and adding them directly to the phone from the app, and the opportunity to open files stored on your phone with other programs. It’s not the meatiest update, but it’s available now in the Windows Store, and adding the document sync feature to the app — which was already capable of handling most other types of files — is still some pleasant news.

As we all know Google Doodle is fun and becomes the main logo attraction, these are made to celebrate holidays, birthdays, famous artists etc. We love them because they make the Google homepage more exciting and adds a little more eye candy, if you love Google Doodles then please do check out these Doodle 4 Google based apps.

Please remember these apps are just for fun, to submit your own Google Doodles please head on over to the official website.

Doodle 4 Google based apps pic 1

The first app is simply called ‘Google Doodle’ that can be installed via the App Store; this app will show users over 1,000 doodles ever created from around the world. The application is great because you can filter the doodles by country and/or year, once you open a doodle you can learn more about it.

The next app is via Google Play and called ‘CodeG: Google Doodle Widget’, this is said to be a fantastic app (We have not tested it so we will let you tell us what you think); it allows users to explore Google doodles in a notification dropdown window and widget.

Main App Features: Custom Frame, Auto Update Doodle, Save Doodle to device, Get Worldwide Google Doodle, Open Google Now directly from widget, Use doodle as Android 4.2 Lockscreen Widget, Custom notification and widget doodle, Explore old Google Doodle, Create widget to view nice doodle, you can even share these via Facebook, Whatsapp etc.

Last but not least is ‘Google Doodles 2’ also via Google Play, not a lot of information on this one, but well worth checking out.

What is the best Google Doodle you have ever seen?

iPad 5, mini 2 and iPhone 5S overcrowding at release

Samsung has been known to hit the smartphone industry with a number of models, which is tackling Apple with diversity rather than just one successful handset and these devices launch throughout the year. Apple’s upcoming iPad 5, iPad mini 2 and iPhone 5S will no doubt sell extremely well no matter what the release date ends up being, but should they really all launch around the same time?

Apple has changed since Jobs – in our opinion things have changed a lot since Steve Jobs, and after owning every iPhone and iPad to date we have some hands-on insight that spans many years when it comes to Apple products. There’s definitely been a big change at Apple since Steve Jobs past away, although it is still up for debate if things are getting better or worse?

Like many of our readers, we noticed the change from WWDC to fall when releasing the iPhone 4S after a long wait reportedly due to supply problems. Some technology websites hoped to see the iPhone 5 launch back at WWDC 2012, which never happened and the current iPhone ended up launching around one year later at the end of last year.

Apple’s iPhone 5S release date will be fall againwe clarified the fact that an iPhone 5S would unlikely release at WWDC 2013 without revealing some supply chain movement, which hasn’t happened to date and considering the event is next month shows another fall release date window.

We are also seeing the same pattern as last year when it comes to a fall launch for iPad 5 and iPad mini 2. This means Apple’s biggest upcoming products will all release right next to each other again, which really doesn’t seem good business sense in our opinion.

The end of this year will be very crowded when it comes to new Apple products, and if you want to purchase an iPhone 5S, iPad 5 and iPad mini 2 on their release date…it will cost you a lot of money considering the launches are likely going to be days apart.

Do you think Apple should spread the iPad 5, mini 2 and iPhone 5S release dates throughout the year? Should the iPhone 6 return to WWDC in 2014? Whatever Apple plan to do with their release schedule is clearly going to have major consequences for both consumers and business, which has been seen with a mobile telecommunications company making big changes for the next iPhone and consumers having to consider timing a 24-month contract upgrade if a bigger iPhone 6 update could arrive at WWDC next year. If an iPhone 5S arrives as a minor update it will not be welcomed by long-time iPhone users.

We’d also love to know if you would consider purchasing an iPad right now knowing that a new iPad 5 and mini 2 will most likely release in around 4 months? You can read about tactical price drops happening already.

The Nokia Lumia 938 has specs that rock and steps up the size of Nokia Lumia device displays to 5.2-inches. This is a beauty of a phone but before we go any further we should tell you that this comes from the imagination of one designer and is not a real upcoming Nokia device. Nevertheless we thought it so impressive that we wanted to share it with you.

As smartphone development seems to be moving in leaps and bounds we sometimes enjoy looking ahead to future possible devices and what they could offer and this is where concept phones can really give us some great ideas. The Nokia Lumia 938 was designed by Juskteez Vu and not only looks stylish (if rather boxy) but also has some mind-blowing specs.

You can see an image of Vu’s concept design below this story and his envisioned Lumia handset is powered by a 2.7GHz dual-core processor, with a 5.2-inch PureMotion high resolution display with 366 ppi, 2GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage expandable to a whopping 128GB via microSD.

It also has a 17-megapixel rear camera with 1080p HD video recording as well as autofocus and LED flash as well as a front-facing 3-megapixel camera with secret lens. As well as all this the Nokia Lumia 938 has a 3000 mAh battery and wireless charging support and runs Windows Phone 8.8.

We think fans of Nokia’s Lumia smartphones would love to see a Lumia phone with a larger display and would love to hear what you think about the Lumia 938. You may also be interested in another Nokia Lumia concept that we recently showed here.

If the Nokia Lumia 938 were a real smartphone from Nokia would you purchase it? What appeals to you most about this concept design? Let us know with your comments.

‘Google Play Games’ uncovered as Android’s home for invites, achievements and more

'Google Play Games' leaks, gives Android gamers a home for invites, achievements and more

A Google-built alternative to Game Center on iOS and Games Hub on Windows Phone surfaced last month, and we know even more about it. Android Police dug into a new Play Services (an Android component you don’t access directly, but does things like update Google apps) APK, and found the latest version hid a massive update getting ready for Google Play Games. Although it’s not directly accessible yet, so far it’s revealed support for system wide notifications, standardized notifications managed by Google+, and cloud synced game saves to work across multiple devices. Also built in are the other parts of any modern gaming service like matchmaking, leaderboards, achievements, lobbies and such. Exactly how all this works and how devs will put it to use will probably be revealed next week at Google I/O, but for now there are a few more screenshots beyond the source link.
