Clarion Next Gate hands-on (video)

Image

CTIA, while focused on mobile technology, often gives us the chance to peek at other devices that bridge into our beloved mobile world. Clarion‘s Next Gate is one such device, running on a 7-inch WVGA display and interfacing with your iPhone via the dock connector. Once you’re hooked up — which should be straightforward as it only needs plugging in — the Next Gate allows control of apps on your device. First off, we like the idea that your iPhone is controlled by the Next Gate — in fact when firing up an app in the demo you can see it cycle open on the iPhone display — but its lower resolution display, hung adjacent to an iPad, made us immediately yearn for an upgraded display. The selection of usable apps includes such niceties as Twitter, Facebook, streaming radio, and of course navigation. All the apps we saw seemed to perform quite well, though we weren’t on the open road in bright sunlight with the top down and the quadruplets screaming bloody murder in the back seat, thankfully. Have a peek at the video and gallery below for a tour of the interface and some of its functionality.

Joseph Volpe contributed to this report.

Parrot launching new AR.Drone2.0 at CES?

We happened upon Parrot’s outdoor AR.Drone corral at CES and this signage immediately caught our eyes. Parrot AR.Drone2.0 Fly – Record – Share: is this an all-new device or a firmware bump that adds some new functionality? The social media aspect of the poster is pretty self evident — and might be accomplished with a device firmware upgrade — but we’re kind of hoping for a new Drone with better cameras, speed, battery life, and while we’re listing things, a dedicated remote control wouldn’t hurt a bit. While we’re not sure exactly what AR.Drone2.0 is, you can be sure we’ll be back in a few days with hands-on of whatever shakes out of Parrot’s PR.

Nokia Sleeping Screen: soothing low power notification for Symbian^3

Nokia‘s cooked up a rather lovely and useful new app in its beta labs realm for all you lucky Symbian^3 owners: Nokia Sleeping Screen. Now rather than simply seeing a blank sleeping device you’ll be awash in useful info like message notifications, time and date, missed calls, and even a night clock mode that further dims the display while you rest your weary eyes. The display mode used isn’t bright and instead of rendering the entire screen, all the icons are drawn using small circles — which we assume further reduces the energy required — and the app even goes to sleep while covered in a pocket or a bag. The only negative in the list is that apparently the phone can’t be used as a flashlight while Sleeping Screen is running — but we expect those enjoying the soothing cool hues won’t mind that too much. Honestly, this seems like nothing but useful to us, and if Nokia’s claim of not significantly impacting battery life is to be believed, may well be a must-have app.

[Thanks, Kari]

Cobra iRadar detection system for Android hands-on

We’d mentioned Cobra was porting the iRadar app to Android a while back and had a chance to actually have a peek at Showstoppers last night. Like its iPhone cousin, the iRadar system ships with a simple radar detector and an app for your set. Pricing is set at $129 for this kit and it is apparently shipping as of April 4th. So If you enjoy speeding and want a little help getting that done, the following video tour and gallery are for you.
