Droid Charge shows its colors in Verizon training docs, Droid Bionic gets killed off?

Samsung gave us the basic specs on day one, but Verizon’s sparing no detail this week, as it trains employees how to effectively sell the LTE-packed Droid Charge to those of us who live and die by how many devices we can connect to our hotspot (10) and size of our bundled microSD card (32GB). Droid-Life brings us those revelations, while Phone Arena has a rumor most upsetting if true — that site’s anonymous tipsters claim that the Droid Bionic is no more. They say that the Atrix-alike’s Tegra 2 processor wasn’t playing nice with Verizon’s LTE baseband chips and had overheating issues too, and rather than expend more effort to fix the incompatibilities, Motorola simply gave it the boot. However, Phone Arena‘s quick to mention that the “Droid Bionic” name may live on, as Moto will redouble its efforts on the top-shelf Targa. We’re reaching out to Verizon right now, and we expect we’ll have an official “we do not comment on rumors and speculation” before long.

Pandora mobile app found to be sending birth date, gender and location information to ad servers

We still haven’t heard much more about that Federal Grand Jury investigation into Pandora and other mobile apps over privacy concerns, but an independent security firm has now gone ahead and taken matters into its own hands. According to an analysis done by the folks at Veracode, Pandora does indeed seem to be sharing more information about you then it lets on. More specifically, they found that the Android app (they haven’t yet gotten around to the iOS version) “appears” to be sending information about users’ birth date, gender, Android ID and GPS location to various advertising companies — bits of information that the firm notes could be combined to determine who someone is, what they do for a living, and even who they associate with. For its part, Pandora is simply declining to to comment at the moment, and we’re guessing that’s unlikely to change anytime soon given the aforementioned investigation. Hit up the source link below for Veracode’s complete findings.

      Switched On: The PlayBook polyglot

Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology.

When Apple introduced the iPad, it had but a smattering of third-party applications, but the company stressed its own. As Apple iPhone software SVP Scott Forstall stated in the iPad introduction video, “We looked at the device and we decided: let’s redesign it all. Let’s redesign, reimagine and rebuild every single app from the ground up specifically for the iPad.”

Compare this to the strategy employed by RIM, makers of the upcoming BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. One year after the iPad’s debut, Apple’s head start in apps has proven an formidable advantage against the onslaught of slates announced by its competitors in the smartphone world. Some have chosen to latch onto Android and attain backwards compatibility with over 200,000 existing smartphone apps. HP, with its TouchPad as flagship, will circle its wagons of PCs, printers and phones around the webOS platform. However, the announcement this week that RIM, too, will support Android apps says much about how the company sees its position in the tablet wars.

Sony Ericsson’s Xperia Play ad: gross human thumbs stitched onto robots, drugged clubgoers, not much more we can say

Is this the creepiest ad ever produced to introduce a new video game console? That’s a high bar to pass — but is it the creepiest ad for a new smartphone? Perhaps. The minute-long spot for Sony Ericsson’s upcoming Xperia Play called “The Donor” appears to explain the backstory behind its last ad, relaying the tale of a young gentleman who was clubbing with friends, met an attractive woman, took her home, and woke up the next morning to discover that his thumbs were stone cold gone (notice the dirty, poorly-bandaged stumps on the table as he tells his tale of woe to a local law enforcement official). Cut to the next scene, where we’ve got our cute, lovable Android bot waddling around town… oh, and he’s got human thumbs crudely sewn onto his arms. Go ahead, recoil in horror, vomit in the trashcan next to your desk, then cue the inevitable increased desire in owning this phone. Follow the break for the video, if you dare.

For some the new Android 2.3.2 update for the Google Nexus S smartphone is now available, it is rolling out gradually so please be patient.

We decided to visit Android Central to see what was happening today and there it was the new update for the Google Nexus S; apparently this new software update is for the SMS bug fix that users have been waiting on.

So we decided to a look a little more into this and decided to visit XDA Developers Forum and see if any problems have occurred, and yes there were a few.

One user decided without thinking to install the new Android 2.3.2 update and when it got to the point of the handset rebooting the users Nexus S froze, they could not find the recovery so removed the phones battery and now is left with 2.3.1 and it is still rooted.

Another XDA forum member asked a good question “will installing this update kill my root?” what do you think? Check the Settings > About > System Updates and see if you have it or here is the download link if you prefer.

Please let us know if you have installed the Android 2.3.2 update on your Google Nexus S smartphone and if you have encountered any problems. Please remember if you install this update you do at your own risk.

Sprint you little devils you, this one will enrage a few 3G users. Sprint is going to put a price increase on its data plan by $10 a month and will call the new service ‘premium data’.

You got Sprint postpaid rates, so add $10 per month Premium Data to activations of smartphones beginning Jan. 30 and anger many 3G users in the process, not bad going guys.

Just so you know all subscribers with smartphones can still get the best value in wireless that includes Any Mobile Anytime feature offered nationwide only by Sprint (According to the press release being shown via Engadget). We would love to hear from Sprint 3G users if they think the extra charge to its 3G Everything data plans is a bad move?

Basically and in a nutshell all 3G users will get charged the same as HTC EVO 4G and Epic 4G users pay for the Sprint 4G service, not fair really when you look at it like that is it.

Please visit Engadget above for the full Sprint press release and then let us know what you think, we cannot wait to read your comments on this one. Got a feeling this will get heated.

Remember when all the hot news was surrounding the white iPhone 4, well that news retired up until now because this white version of the Apple smartphone has been spotted.

If you visit Engadget you will see a few screenshots of the Vodafone de (Germany) inventory list showing weiß (white) iPhone 4s in both 16 and 32GB versions, is Apple and Foxconn about to bring out the white iPhone 4 at last or is this an error on someone’s part?

We always take this sort of news lightly until the real official news has been announced but nether the less it is clearly showing the white iPhone 4, which is something to think about until it becomes official.

Sorry for the short news but we will keep you posted to see if this all becomes true or not, it could be a mistake in the Vodafone system. What do you think? All comments are greatly appreciated.
