HTC One 4.2 today

The HTC One in many people’s eyes is currently the best Android smartphone available to consumers, which is down to its specifications and premium build quality. A fault that can be levelled at the handset by some though is the version of the operating system it is currently running, but the HTC One Android 4.2 update arrival expectations are growing with a possible release imminent.

Previously there was talk that the Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean update would arrive by the middle of this month according to the head of HTC Russia, but now Yves Wi from HTC France has taken to Twitter and has suggested the update could begin its journey as early as today.

The smartphone manufacture hasn’t so far made any announcements about the new firmware’s availability but if this information is correct we can expect to hear something at anytime. Serial HTC tipster @LlabTooFeR has also commented on the situation and also thinks the update is about to happen.

This will obviously be big news for owners of the handset and it could signal the release of the HTC One via Verizon Wireless as there has been talk the carrier was waiting to the handset had Android 4.2.2 on board before providing the device.

We are only just over a couple of weeks away from the release of the HTC One Google Edition so it makes sense for HTC to update the standard model to the later firmware before this becomes available in the US.

Do you think the HTC One will see the new firmware today?

LG Optimus G Pro China, Asia launch date invitation

New ‘ImaGination Begins’ event invitations are being sent out with the LG Optimus G Pro on the front, the event will kick off on May 30th in Macau, China. This suggests that the G Pro will be release in China and other parts of Asia in the coming weeks.

Details are limited but what we do know is that the LG Optimus G Pro is already selling in Japan, South Korea. AT&T is also selling the Optimus G Pro on contract for $199.99 and outright for $549.99.

LG Optimus G Pro

This model in China could come with either a 5-inch or 5.5-inch display, we will have to wait and see. We believe that this LG event may just mention the LG Optimus GK as well; we will be keeping a close eye on this for you and will keep you updated.

Back in April we published an article pitting the LG Optimus G Pro against the HTC One, see the specs and versus right here.

Above we mentioned the LG Optimus GK could be announced as well at the event, this model has similar specs to the G Pro. The GK model comes with a 5-inch full HD display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, 2GB of RAM, 1.7GHz quad core Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor, pixel density of 440ppi, it also has 16GB of built in storage and a 3,100 mAh battery. It also has a 13-megapixel rear camera and a front-facing 2-megapixel camera.

This is why we are wondering if the GK will be mentioned as well, because at the moment this is set for the Korean market, it would make sense to release this in China as well.

Just wish to say a big thank you to Android Central for the LG event news.

The HTC One specs have been hailed by a large number of our readers over the last couple of weeks, and smartphone users seem to love the aluminum external case, 1.7GHz quad-core CPU and a number of other notable features.

While the HTC One design and speed impresses, some people want more and are willing to overclock the HTC One with a custom ROM to achieve it. The smartphone might be one of the fastest on the market right now, but a number of videos have appeared on YouTube explaining “how easy” it is to find and flash a custom kernel.

HTC-One-overclock-select-speed

We have featured one such video below this article, which shows the process of overclocking the HTC One and delivering a much faster processor speed. The hands-on review then compares the results in a before and after, so you can see the exact difference a HTC One overclock creates in terms of performance.

HTC-One-install-custom-ROM

HTC One overheating and problems – we must point out that any custom installs like this come with risk, and you do so at your own risk. The video below even points out one issue they had when installing a custom kernel, which led to the smartphone shutting down and not turning on for around 2 hours. It must have taken this long for the device to cool down enough.

The successful custom install used the ElementalX Kernel, although they point out there’s a lot of Kernels to choose from. Watch the 6-minute video and let us know if overclocking your HTC One interests you, and if you have installed a custom Kernel did it happen problem free? If you’re waiting to update your HTC One to Jelly Bean 4.2, then you can read an update in this article that explains it should be rolling out soon.

On a side note, we have seen a few people ask for a Galaxy S4 Exynos 5 overclock although this doesn’t seem possible. The majority of Galaxy S4 users point out “Samsung doesn’t release the source code”. What are your thoughts on overclocking?

Android metrics show Jelly Bean adoption overtaking Ice Cream Sandwich

Google dashboard metrics show Android 4 near 60 percent of active users

Google’s big shake-up of Android version metrics has already given us a better understanding of where the platform’s active users truly stand. Now that we’re a month into the new methodology, we have a good sense of where those users are going — and they’re moving to Jelly Bean in droves. Android 4.1 and 4.2 combined grew to represent 28.4 percent of regular usage, or enough to finally overtake Ice Cream Sandwich at 27.5 percent. Not surprisingly, the transition to the newer OS involved a balanced mix of users either upgrading from ICS (down by 1.8 percent) or transitioning from devices running Gingerbread or earlier (down 1.7 percent). It will be a long while before Jelly Bean becomes the dominant platform, if it ever does, but we’re not expecting a slowdown in adoption when flagships like the Galaxy S 4 and One are luring many of us into an upgrade.
