Rumors are, Apple is testing Siri on devices other than the iPhone 4S.

Siri, as you might already know, is Apple’s personal assistant service that you interact with using your voice, but was exclusive to the iPhone 4S only. The service is a huge hit with users, being able to do things like set reminders, timers, calendar schedules, read incoming text messages, emails, yada yada. Previously folks figured that Siri needed the dual core A5 processor on the 4S to work. Siri also requires an internet connection to carry out functions.

Siri has been hacked/ported to work on other devices like the iPhone 4 though, so its plausible enough that Apple might be working on bringing Siri to iPads and older iPhones, eh?

Microsoft has apparently changed their hardware requirements for Windows Phone to state that the Camera is no longer required.

What would this allow for? Well there’s a chance it could mean more affordable devices. Interestingly, a couple manufacturers have been leaving out some features in their Windows Phones to get their prices down, like the HTC Radar having no compass or Gyroscope onboard, and the Nokia Lumia 800 similarly featuring no gyroscope or front facing camera. Not necessarily a move I agree with, but eh as long as everyone makes one flagship-featuring-everything.

Standard Hardware

  • A common set of hardware controls and buttons that include the Start, Search, and Back buttons.
  • A large WVGA (800 x 480) format display capable of rendering most web content in full-page width and displaying movies in widescreen.
  • Capacitive 4-point multi-touch screens for quick, simple control of the phone and its features.
  • Support for data connectivity using cellular networks and Wi-Fi.
  • 256 MB (or more) of RAM and 8 GB (or more) of flash storage.
  • A-GPS
  • Accelerometer

Optional Hardware

  • Compass
  • Gyro
  • Primary Camera
  • Front-facing Camera

I really reaaaaally hope this doesnt imply the return of EDoF cameras on Nokia’s Windows Phones though. Pretty please?

According to a report by This Is My Next, AT&T might be trying to get a bit of a ‘competitive advantage‘ over rival carriers with the help of a little kinda-4G-magic on the iPhone 4S.

the carrier is apparently “working with Apple” to change the indicator in the iPhone 4S (which tops out at 14.4Mbps, up from the iPhone 4?s 7.2Mbps) to show “4G” in the status bar as well.

Apple has never get any carrier change anything about the iPhone so AT&T might not be able to do much. Infact, even though the iPhone 4S technically does have HSPA+, Apple doesnt mention it in the specs list, with Apple SVP saying at that the ‘Lets Talk iPhone‘ event that Apple wont be interfering with carriers on what is true 4G and what isnt. AT&T have even put out an infographic on the 4G situation:

There’s a 3.5 Inch ClearBlack LED-backlit IPS TFT nHD resolution touchscreen display, the first time we’ve seen Clearblack on an LED-backlit screen.

IMG_2052wtmk

There’s a 1Ghz processor, and Symbian belle, which means things are very impressive in overall operations and user experience compared to previous Symbian devices.

IMG_2055wtmk

There’s an 8 Megapixel EDoF fixed-focus camera at the back, with a Dual LED Flash and 720p HD Video recording, and also a front facing camera for video calls. Again we’re not fans of the EDof Camera.

IMG_2054wtmk

There’s also 8GB of internal memory, and a microSD card slot.

IMG_2056wtmk

Little things like Active noise cancellation to improve call quality are also onboard on the Nokia 701, along with a host of connectivity options like Quadband GSM, pentaband 3g, HSPA, Bluetooth 3.0, NFC, Wifi, GPS, FM radio (not transmitter unfortunately) and a 3.5mm Audio Jack.

Coming to stores this Q3, in Steel Dark, Silver Light, Amethyst violet, and White colors. We’re still working on our preview of the Nokia 701, but check out our hands-on video below in the meanwhile:
